Think Different in South Africa

The Think Different: Abuse Prevention and Support course was first delivered at The Khaya Centre, Soweto, in 2022.

The programme is now delivered weekly across two community centres, reaching over 1,600 children and young adults on an ongoing basis. This scale of delivery demonstrates both the adaptability of the programme and the clear demand for preventative, trauma-informed education in community settings.

Impact is measured using comprehensive psychological evaluations. Results show increased self-esteem, improved emotional regulation, and a clear reduction in abusive and aggressive behaviours. Participants consistently report feeling safer, more positive, and better equipped to manage difficult emotions, alongside stronger peer connection across genders and a reduction in harmful thoughts and behaviours.

The impact extends well beyond the classroom. Children regularly share what they have learned with peers outside the sessions, generating strong interest and engagement from others who want to take part. A particularly powerful example was children adapting the “I can do it!” song taught during sessions to encourage their friends, changing the words to “You can do it!” — a clear sign of internalised learning and peer-to-peer impact.

Caregivers also report meaningful change. Many have shared improvements in connection with colleagues, increased emotional awareness, and the use of breathing, mindfulness, and regulation techniques within their own families.

Our mission is to prevent harmful behaviours, strengthen emotional resilience, and empower young people before harm becomes normalised. We are actively seeking partners and sponsors who share this vision. If you would like to support or collaborate, please reach out.

Partnership

We are seeking support to run the Think Different Course to train caregivers and educators of young children across South Africa and the UK to deliver the course directly themselves to the children they serve and support.

We will be delivering the following projects:

  • In-person Teacher Training of the course to caregivers and educators
  • In-person Think Different session to children and young adults
  • Online Teacher Training sessions
  • Online Think Different sessions

To break the cycle of abuse,
