Think Different in South Africa
The Think Different: Abuse Prevention and Support course was first ran at The Khaya Centre, South Africa in October 2022. The results confirmed the benefits of the course for over 150 children and 50 adults.
We are profoundly grateful for the opportunity to conduct a trial of Think Different, at The Khaya Centre.
Over three weeks, the course was taught to approximately 150 children and 50 adults. The program was structured to span a week for each group, in two-hour sessions consisting of yoga, meditation, and group activities.
To measure the impact of the course, we employed comprehensive psychological evaluations. The results demonstrated an increase in self-esteem, enhanced emotional management, and a notable reduction in abusive behaviour. Participants reported heightened feelings of safety, an improved ability to foster positivity, and effectively manage negative emotions. Additionally, a surge in self-love and compassion were observed, leading to a tangible decline in aggressive and explosive behaviour. The results were impressive after only a short amount of time.
The impact extended far beyond the immediate participants. Not only did the children and caregivers experience visible positive changes, including heightened gratitude, deeper connections and support, but the ripple effect was astounding. The children shared their newfound knowledge with their peers outside the class, resulting in a surge of interest and enthusiasm from other children to join the sessions. The children also modified the lyrics to the "I can do it!" song taught in our classes, to inspire their friends, singing "You can do it!" instead.
The caregivers also shared poignant stories of supporting colleagues with whom they may not have typically connected with, and implementing the activities within their own families at home. All participants acquired invaluable tools for maintaining mental fortitude and cultivating happiness, such as meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises, which the Khaya Centre continue to employ and benefit from to this day.
Our experience working with the incredible adults and children at The Khaya Centre left an indelible mark on our hearts. As a testament to the profound impact, we are returning next year to provide training for the caregivers, enabling them to continue the teachings of Think Different and ensure ongoing education and support for the children.
We strive to prevent abuse and empower young individuals to unlock their full potential. To achieve this vision, we are actively seeking partners and sponsors. Please reach out to discuss how you can help.
